iPhoto will not open photo for editing

My MacMini HD was getting dangerously full so I moved my entire iPhoto library over to my MiniStack external drive. Since doing so, I am able to display mulitiple photographs within their folders, but if I click on an individual image to open for editing, a plain black screen opens with no photo. Same thing occurs if I select 'slideshow'. This is very worrying. Advice please!

The MiniStack is MacOS Extended (Journaled).

I didn't want to make any mistakes when I moved iPhoto so came here to this forum to ask for assistance. I was merely directed to a Mac website that gave instuctions -- so I followed them. I found iPhoto in my PICTURES folder and dragged it onto the MiniStack. However, I noticed afterwards that iPhoto remained in the HD's Applications folder. So I deleted it. Was that wrong?

No except the directions that experianced users here give always include tully testing your library in the new location prior to deleting the old one - things do go wrong sometimes

What version of iPhoto do you have?

Try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

If running iPhoto 9 (11) apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

User uploaded file

Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

You do not backup the program - you backup the data -

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

It is critical since things can go wrong - Time Machine is a good backup but for this I sugest duplicating the iPhoto library if you have disk space as an added security - once things are finished and working you can delete the backup copy

When attempting to repair file permissions, I got the following message

THE PHOTO LIBRARY NEEDS TO BE UPGRADED TO WORK WITH THIS VERSION OF IPHOTO. WILL NOT BE READABLE BY PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF IPHOTO AFTER UPGRADE.

I don't care if it won't work with previous versions, but don't like the implication that it won't work with the current version.

1 - of course you have a backup in case of problems - bad things do happen

2 - there is no implication that it will not work with the current version - it clearly says that it must be upgraded to work with the version you have

and that once upgraded it will not work with previous versions

However I am concerned as to why yu are getting that since nothing you have done should cause the library to need to be upgraded

So all you did was depres sthe option and command keys and launch iphoto nad select the repair permissions selection? Nothing else?

I recovered orphaned photos first.... I said I didn't want them but I think they were saved to another location anyway. I then proceeded to the next step which was rebuild - and got the annoying upgrade message. Would you recommend I proceed without the upgrade? I do have another copy of my iPhoto library saved.
