extend transmit range
is there a setting to extend the wifi transmit signal on the time capsule (802.11n) without having to buy an aiport extreme to expand its range?

Unfortunately, no.
The Time Capsule is set by default to broadcast at maximum power allowed, so if the Time Capsule is not covering the area that you need, you will need to add an additonal AirPort to "extend" the network.
