Cannot swipe in any direction using remote app

HELP! lost the original remote and only use the remote apps but can no longer swipe in any direction to navigate. it's affecting all of our devices (iphone5, ipad, ipod)-- anyone else having this issue?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4

Before you proceed with troubleshooting any connectivity issues with Remote, make sure you have the latest version of Remote installed on your iOS device.


Remote app for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch can't connect to iTunes or Apple TV

Remote application may not respond while Apple TV is syncing to iTunes as well.
