Q: can you use an 85 watt adapter on a macbook air which normally takes 45 watts?  or vice versa?

can you use an 85 watt adapter (Macbook Pro 15") on a 12" macbook air which normally takes 45 watts?  or vice versa?

    Charger wattage

    You would not use a 45W adapter with that computer; it would not provide enough power for that MacBook.

    Yes you can use the 85W adapter on either system but you can't use the 45W adapter on the 15" mac. It simply does not supply enough wattage for the 15" model.
