Q: does the missing ipod have to have the app installed?

trying to track my sons ipod. does it have to have the app previously installed on it to be able to locate?

iPod touch (4th generation)

No.  He doesn't need the app installed, but he does need to have set up iCloud and enabled Find My iPod on it in order for it to be tracked.  It must also be turned on with a connection to the internet and still have his settings unchanged.
