May 5, 2013 7:06 PM in response to Godandoby Grant Bennet-Alder,No, you got 1Password, a very intrusive trouble-prone add-on that adds a kernel extension.
When you restart in Safe mode, its kernel extension is not loaded, so things work again.

????
I have 1Password, and it has no kernel extension. I also wouldn't call it intrusive or trouble-prone, in my experience. Is there something I don't know? If so, please refer me to a source so I can re-evaluate it.

May 6, 2013 3:59 AM in response to Godandoby thomas_r.,One thing this definitely isn't is a virus, or any other kind of malware.
As to what it is, I would have to disagree with Grant's diagnosis until I see some documentation, as 1Password has never caused any problems for me. I would ask to clarify some details... you said that you could only "shut it off and start it in safe mode. Does that mean that the machine wouldn't even start up at all, except in safe mode? If so, exactly what did it do when you tried to start up normally?
You also said that it only allows you to do one thing, then freezes. Is this while in safe mode, or while booted up normally? If you are able to boot up normally, are you able to open the Terminal application (search for it with Spotlight) without it crashing? If so, please execute the following lengthy command in the Terminal:
kextstat | grep -v com.apple; ls -al ~/Library/LaunchAgents; ls -al /Library/LaunchDaemons
(Ideally, you'll want to triple-click that line, copy it and paste into the Terminal.)

May 6, 2013 6:41 AM in response to Godandoby The hatter,Pre-existing trouble waiting to happen.
Anytime you force shutdown the directory has to be repaired.
And before you ever make any ANY change or alteration or apply updates or programs, make a bootable backup clone if you don't or update the one you have.
When you go into Mountain Lion Recovery Mode and do a Disk Repair are there messages that it had to repair anything? not talking about Repair Permissions.

May 6, 2013 10:54 AM in response to thomas_r.by Grant Bennet-Alder,I don't run 1Password. I was rleying on several different complaints of vexing problems it has caused. This is probably the most graphic:

May 7, 2013 1:26 PM in response to Godandoby Godando,I am a little confused - what do you mean when you say paste in the "terminal"
I thought my computer (Mac Book Pro 13" early 2012) was working okay and it finally settled into itself and then it happened again. It froze and lots of skittish horizontal lines at the top part of my screen, like something from an old TV. It turns out I don't have to start it in safe mode everytime - when I was asked if that was the only I could start it I decided to try to start it the normal way and it opened fine. But I have to force quit in order to get back on. I go about my business, checking email, schedules etc, whatever but then I say ok I will try 1Password again and it seems to start out fine and then Wham! It froze the last time when I was trying to put the password lock on my toolbar. Thanks for all the suggestions -

That's bad news. That's a strong indicator that you may have a hardware issue. You'd better get it checked out by Apple. If there's an Apple Store near you, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and have them look at it.
