Q: Updating iOS: Errors 3014 and -1

I'm trying to update the iOS on my iPhone 4 and got error 3014. I took off the security firewall, made sure the iTunes software was up to date, made sure the windows firewall was off, ran the iTunes network diagnostics (showing green lights for everything) and still I get the error (changed to -1). Why does Apple make everything so torturous? Even finding help on iTunes is made difficult by hiding the menu bar (revealed by that easy to guess key combination Ctrl-b). At the very least, an operating system update should restore the old OS in the event of failure, but Apple in their wisdom leaves you stranded with a dead iPhone and no obvious options to fix the problem. Help please!

Yes, thank you, I too can read and, as I tried to make clear in my original query, I tried all those options without any success.

I found the answer myself at 3 am after much frustration. It is very simple and not stated anywhere that I can see in Apple's voluminous troubleshooting information. You have to SIGN IN to your Apple account! That's it.

I have a long-standing HATRED of iTunes with passion and my next smartphone purchase will be a Samsung Galaxy. The Apple hardware is great, but the software is appalling.

You are a Windows user and claim Apple's software is appaling. How ironic. I've always used that swiiss cheese for security OS at work and that is some appaling software. I wouldn't call my dislike for Windows after having used it for so long - a long-standing hatred with passion (I don't recall an inanimate object affecting me so), but my personal money has never been spent on Windows and never will.

Be sure to purchase and use antivirus with your Android device because you will need it. Android is the Windows of the mobile OS world in regards to security along with being a copy of Apple software.

Oh I started using an Apple Mac in 1985, so yes, I have a fair amount of experience with Apple products and the computer OS  is intuitive, stable and good. What I am talking about here is iTunes for interfacing with handheld devices, which is frankly terrible because its functionality is aimed at a very young user group: in other words people who will be compliant with the way that Apple likes to do things. Tell me this: why does Apple hide the menu bar in iTunes by default? The answer to this says it all and is the reason why this product drives me crazy with frustration.

Yes, Windows and Android devices have their pitfalls too, but at least there is competition for applications, which means if you don't like the way an application does something, you can choose to buy another one that is better for you. It's a bit like democracy versus totalitarianism, I prefer to have a choice.

    Competition for which applications?

I personally am all for competition, that is what I want in consumer devices. So definetly go and try something else. Use it- love it or hate it. If your experience is good I will be happy for you. Please do not feel that you have to defend your opinion. And no, you don't have to be signed in to restore, there was something else that you have done.
