So on the apple page http://www.apple.com/iphone/built-in-apps/ they say something about visual voicemail? What is it and how do I activate it? Thanks in advance!

go to the phone app and tap voicemail at the bottom, basically it's just a way to see what voicemail messages you have and listen to them.
Yeah, but listening to a robot and pressing 7 isn't exactly visual, is it?
I actually came here because I just upgraded to an iPhone 5 from my 3GS and had the same problem; hitting voicemail, where it once took me to Visual Voicemail, now just called the voicemail line the old fashioned way. I tried that twice, Googled it, and wound up here. Was also rooting around under Settings > Phone but didn't see anything or change anything. Just as I was about to click "I have this question too", I look down and there's a prompt on my phone asking me for my voicemail passwork, and now Visual Voicemail works as it used to. I have no idea what triggered the prompt, but it works a charm now.
No idea if this is anything resembling helpful or not.
