"Ipod software update server could not be contacted"

I have windows 8 and the latest version of itunes (11.0.2.26). Every ipod touch ive reset gets stuck in recovery mode and a message displays "ipod software update server could not be contacted. please try again later." I ran diagnostics and itunes is connected to the internet, is opened as administrator in the administrator profile, allowed in both my internet and windows firewalls (allowed all itunes in-bound rules), disabled my firewalls, ive update my usb drivers, cleared my dns cache, and basically every other option possible. And when i open Apple Software Update program itll say "Apple software update server could not be found". The same device will restore with my brothers computer but not mine (he has windows 7 and since mine is a more powerful system i believe it has something to do with windows 8?)

Hi Caelynx,

It definitely sounds like you have taken some great troubleshooting and isolation steps. Let's see if the following information resolves this issue:

iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1814

  1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
  2. Select Network and Internet and select Internet Options. Or in Classic View, open the Internet Options control panel.
  3. Click the Connections tab.
  4. Click the LAN Settings button.
  5. Select the "Automatically detect settings" checkbox.User uploaded file
  6. Click OK in both windows.
  7. Reopen iTunes and connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
  8. Update or restore your device.

If the above does not resolve the issue, please see the "Additional Information" section regarding the hosts file.

Thanks,

Matt M.

Usually, there is one and only one reason for that - something blocks that connection. Windows firewall to my small experience is not strong enough to to that. So you need to check two things as far as I am concerned.

1. you need to check your hosts file. If you know how it suppose to look you ll see difference right away. If you don't just use "Microsoft fixit" for host file program (Google search)

2. If disabling antivirus does not help -uninstall completely - I do not want you to not have antivirus, just eliminate as a threat. Sometimes the problem is not current antivirus, but the remnants of the previous, run clean up tool for previous. (Google "Norton clean up tool" or mcafee ....)

If this two things do not help you - at the very least try to create another user account and see if the problem exists there.

Im not 100% sure how but i did it. Since i already had an ipod touch assigned to my apple id i restored that one with a different computer. Then i ran the program compability test and set itunes to windows 7 compatibility and was able to restore the other touch
