Q: Airport Extreme crashes when extend wireless network to include Express printer

Every time I follow prescribed set-up - AirportExtreme connected by ethernet to ADSL2+ wired modem; AExtreme settings = PPOE, bridge mode, allow this network to be extended - then seek to extend wireless network to, include Airport Express to run USB printer, the AExtreme (1st Gen) (a) fails to see the network which is to be extended (it finds every one other than the one that it has created), (b) tells me this network cannot be extended and, if I get past that by inserting the name of this network in the window and find the Express popping up on Airport Utility and Update, (c) crashes the Extreme so that I need to undertake a factory re-set on the Extreme. Note that I am running the old Airport Utility 5.6 in order to see both devices as well as running the current Airport Utility beside it. When the Express is visible on the network, it cannot be seen on the new Utility.

This was all working before I changed the name to reflect our change of address. Now those settings are lost with factory re-set and new ones which are the same as the old don't work. Extensive Googling has (a) confirmed my settings to be consistent with those advised as being appropriate for extending the network and (b) frazzled my brain.

FIXED. After 48 hours of frustration, I eventually installed the AExpress wth the AExtreme turned off so the Airport Utility couldn't "see" it, having already installed the network on the AExtreme and given it a name. I set up the AExpress to "Join" the same named network even though it wasn't live at the time. As soon as the Utility reported that it had successfully changed the settings on the AExpress, I turned it off then turned on the AExtreme and waited until it showed up in the Utility. Then turned on the AExpress which then dutifully "joined" the AExtreme network.

I truly hope no-one ever has to go through this but hope, if you do, that this might help.
