Typical ethnocentric knee-jerk reaction from the US denizens, always thinking they're the center of the Universe.
There is and has been for awhile a global IMEI database for registering pilfered phones. The intent is to render them useless if reported stolen, no matter where they pop up. Has been used to great success in Europe; phone theft dropped almost 90% in Scandinavian countries. But now the Americans think they have discovered the bee's knees.....
iPhones do not work like traditional phones. The only way to officially unlock them is to contact the carrier whom they are locked to, for an unlock code. This often takes a few days and is emailed to you. This is sometimes done free of charge or is sometimes charged, it depends on the carrier.
You need go to your phone company/carrier to get your phone unlocked. They are the only ones who can do this for you.
iPhones are also no different to any other phones in this respect. If you want any phone unlocked, then you have to go through your phone company/carrier.
I am becoming exceedingly suspicious of so many people who have phones that they want to unlock. Where do all these phones come from, why don't the people know they are locked ( if it was my phone I would know where it came from and whether or not it was unlocked, in or out of contract etc). I am now no longer answering questions about unlocking.......
I know what you mean and I have been thinking the same thing myself. Perhaps it is people who are buying the phones from ebay or black market sources so they don't know whether they are locked or not and don't have any clue.
I think we need to take a stand and not answer unlocking questions or these questions where the op says ....activation server I available... SIM card does not work. The list goes on. We are just helping potentially suspect phones find homes
Unless there's an ongoing uptick in iPhone thefts in the areas were the OPs purport to live, an alternate possibility is that the first wave of mandatory contracts are coming to an end and peope are fed up with their originally mandatory carriers.
For example, over here we were stuck with a single carrier from i1 till the i4s. Only when the i5 came out were we finally liberated.
So many posters say
They got the phone from a friend who has moved and can't be contact
The bought it and cannot locate the person who sold it to them
It was a spare phone they had
They bought it second and from someone they don't know
Etc etc
I stand by my conjecture. Maybe lots of original owners were stuck with a mandatory term, ended up loathing their iPhones with the Magical Walled Garden and couldn't wait to ditch them once free. Couldn't wait to get their grubby hands on a Galaxy.....
Wrong the iPhone does NOT lock/unlock via an unlock code.
The process is contact your network supplier .
Ask IF they offer unlocking.
IF yes request the unlock and pay any fees requested.
Your network supplier then contacts Apple to request the White listing (Unlocking) of your phone on the iTunes servers.
Apple do this -It takes anything from 3 days to several weeks to complete.
On completion Apple confirms this back to your Network supplier (NOT YOU)
Your network supplier contacts you via email or SMS inviting you to connect your iPhone with your computer via the supplied USB cable and launch iTunes and follow on screen prompts through to the "Congratulations your iPhone is now unlocked" screen.
All these steps need to be carried out with the ORIGINAL SIM and by REGISTERED account holder used when setting up the phone.
Once the Congats...... screen has been reached you can swap out the REGISTERED SIM and replace with a compatable SIM on another network.
CAVEATS
Only the original SIM and Account holder can initiate an unlock- If you bought the phone used/second hand you CAN NOT UNLOCK through official routes
Once unlocked use of a Mobile Virtual Network SIM may result in difficulties sending SMS messages.
You may have to go into Setting /Network/Cellular/Cellular Data Network and enter the correct settings manually.
Further caveat Cellular Data Network menu is SIM card dependant if its not supported you CAN NOT change the settings manually then you may need to contact the SIM card company - They can send a setup SMS if they support this process.
Sorry for the lecture.
PRESEE -
ONLY REGISTERED ACCOUNT HOLDER AND SIM CARD CAN BE USED TO UNLOCK THROUGH OFFICAL ROUTES
ANYONE SELLING THEIR IPHONE SHOULD UNLOCK THE DEVICE BEFORE SELLING ON.
