my iphone 3g became HOT when i was charging, then displayed the message "it needs to cool down before i can use it". so i left it wrapped in a slightly soaked napkin and left it on the whole night. the battery was very low when i left it on. the next morning, it couldn't switch on. it turns black and stays on for about 5 secs when i press the power bottom. tried charging but still off. HELP.

You probably damaged it with the wet napkin... water and electronics don't mix well. Put it in a bowl of rice for several days... you might get lucky.
Edit - use uncooked rice.
how is the rice going to help? if it's realli gonna be of help, then should i put it in a bowl and cover it? And 1 thing is, when i connect the charger, nothing shows but when i dock it on my iMODE, the black screen appears as i said. HELP PLEASE!!
The rice acts like a desicant to remove any moisture from the device.

You can try the rice thing... but honestly, at this point, you'll probably save yourself some aggravation if you just break down and make an appointment at the genius bar. I have a feeling the best case scenario is that you'll be eligible for a subsidised upgrade from your carrier.... If not, an out of warranty replacement will cost you $149.
