my text messsage contacts are showing as numbers, does anyone know how to fix this?

Are the #'s listed in your contacts exactly as they are displayed?
Not sure why, but all of a sudden all of my text messages are no longer showing from my contact names, it comes up as the persons phone number. I checked and my contact still exists in my phone so I'm not sure why this is happening. Any advice?
Actually, I'm sorry but it looks like all of my contacts were erased.
Do you sync your contacts list with anything else (iCloud, Gmail, etc)?
