Q: Why can't I purchase an iTunes gift with store credit?

Why can't I purchase an iTunes Gift with store credit?

What possible valid reason can there be for this - beyond a craven cash-grab on the part of Apple? I paid for the credit, at a store, with cash. If I want to give it to my kid, who has is own account, why can't I?

Once you input the credit you would need to use that credit to purchase iTunes content.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5035  also take a look at this link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2736

Thank you for replying, your response didn't actually address my question at all.

I am entirely clear on the concept and policy and I had already read the content of both of those links thoroughly.

What is not at all clear to me is the WHY of this policy. I paid cash for this credit. Why can't I use it toward a gift?

Perhaps I am asking this question in the wrong place. I should probably be contacting Apple support directly.

Yes, I agree you are asking this question in the wrong forum.  You would need to address Apple directly for an answer to that question.

Still, in many ways it is a question for the community of users to ponder.

I have this problem too. I bought the card with cash, redeemed it, and can't gift anything. I just got a reply from Apple Support, that they consider it 'store credit' and I can't use 'store credit' to gift an album. I'm not going to take this, I started another case, and will call and call, post and post. I find this concept for a company completely ridiculous and rotten!!

    Straight from the horses mouth:

"Greetings from iTunes Store Customer Support. My name is Chaitanya and I am happy to assist you today.

I understand that you are unable to gift an album. I know how important this is for you and I am glad to provide you the necessary information.

I am sorry to inform you that it is not possible to gift an album from the Store credit you need to add your credit card information to gift an album.

If you have any additional questions regarding iTunes, please let me know and I will be happy to assist you further. I hope you continue to enjoy the iTunes Store.

    Have a nice day!

The lesson here is to STOP buying Apple gift cards.

    DSS 3000,

That is a very typical restriction that retailers put on gift cards.  Here is an example:

"Barnes & Noble Gift Cards and eGift Cards cannot be used to purchase other Gift Cards or eGift Cards."

I paid for the credit, at a store, with cash. If I want to give it to my kid, who has is own account, why can't I?

Of course you could have given the gift card to him!  But once you redeemed it in your own account, you defeated the purpose.

You can't use a gift to purchase a gift.

The main reason for this is to cut down on the massive fraud which occurs over iTS.
