turn off iphone earbud play music

I'm not sure how to formulate this one but I would like to disable the mic button on the earphone from starting to play music when the phone is locked, thus draining the battery. I put my iPhone in a backpack pocket and inevitably, some pressure will trigger that mic button and the phone can play for hours draining my battery even though it is locked.

Any idea how to stop this? Seems like an oversight fropm Apple or something that should easily be turned off. Thanks,

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.2

The information about the Earbuds is located on page 31 of the User Guide http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf. It mentions what the buttons can do, however it does not mention any ability to change any settings for them. I don't know that you would be able to disable a setting on the phone that the earbuds control. The only other alternative I can think of, and I know this isn't the answer, but a workaround, is to force close the music app, by double clicking on the home button, then holding down the music app icon until it wiggles and then tap the minus sign to close it. Again, not the answer about settings, but it may be a workaround until something different comes along.

No I'm not. I wasn't talking to you, I was answering another poster who asked how to force closed the music app. Unfortunately at this time, with the earbuds plugged in, the in-line controller in the earbuds will activate the music. There is no setting on the phone to deactivate this feature, and to let Apple know of your thoughts, you need to go to www.apple.com/feedback and click on the appropriate link. I'm just a user, just like you, so ranting at me is not going to change anything.

I just bought the new iPhone buds and like them. I'm not sure I want to spend more money for something as trivial as disabling a feature on an iPhone. Maybe Apple will rectify that next update and allow us to disable the play feature when the phone is locked. If you lock a phone, you expect it to be locked, not become a multimedia center, as much as I like the idea. Seems like a natural to me but I'm not like most people either. Thanks

That's not the problem, I don't want my phone to play music while I'm not listening, then put the buds in and have music blaring while using my battery. That's not much to ask for. I love my Apple products but there are a few things I wish I could do such as disable the mic button from starting music when the phone is locked. That's why I put it on lock. Simple request, shouldn't it?

So to reiterate, I'm looking for a way to disable this feature. Thanks, N.

Yes, the point is how to turn it off, not the just the battery problem alone as I mentioned above. I'm still waiting to find a way to disable a feature I have no use for. So no, I don't have the answer yet.

It's as if you told someone: "Hey this thing is not working and it's draining my battery after while. How can I tun it off?" And the person says it doesn't really drain it. Specs be ******, all I know is I have blasting music when I reach for the buds and if I don't recharge a day and a night, after a few phone calls, it's dead. But it's not the main concern. I want to know how to turn this feature off, I have no need for it. Simple, isn't it? I understand if you don't know and appreciate your input but no, I still don't know how to turn it off.

Thanks for your comment.

@33Nicolas. The iPhone is designed so that if you are listening to music you can powerdown the screen / lock the phone and still listen to your music without the screen running down the battery.

I get what yo want to do but I don't think that Apple is going to do anything about it.

Can you try wrapping your earbuds around your phone with the jack unplugged before you put it in your backpack? Then you can quickly replug the jack when you want to listen again. This also has the added advantage of shutting down the music app when you unplug the earphones so you know it is shut off.

The other option is to get earphones without the mic/playback controls, and yes I read that you didn't want to spend more money on new headphones because you just bought the new earbuds, but until Apple actually gives us such granular control over our devices we are all stuck with workarounds.

I undesrtand Apple's POV and I have a few Apple multimedia devices at home. I still need a phone to do what I want it do. I'm starting to think more and more the iPhone is not the right product for me. Strange Apple wouldn't let you turn off such a simple feature. I'm starting to understand why businesses are reluctant with Apple. I know and disagree with that in general but this feature should be disabled if needed. It's labeled a phone, not a multimedia device.

I drive a stickshift and can't fiddle around the backpack to plug the earphone if a call comes in. It's strange Apple insists on that without any other recourse.

I appreciate your help. Thanks, Nicolas

Not trying to beat a dead horse here, but have you considered a bluetooth headset for handling the calls in the car? I know this is separate from the music issues we discussed earlier, but you mention it in this post. This would help negate the need to keep the earbuds plugged in and you would still be compliant with hands free in a vehicle.

I've considered but opted against it for a few reasons. I'm a stickler for audio quality, and the new in earbuds from Apple sound great for the price, cheaper and better than the old ones. I'm not crazy about a cockroach hanging out of my ear. Call me vain 🙂 Plus, I like binaureal systems. And lastly, I don't want to have to spend more money on something that should work the way it's advertised. I know it's a problem these days. I have an old bluetooth set that could work, but I remember having problems with it.

Lesson lerarned. Never buy anything anymore, no matter how trivial without reading the tech sheet. Talk about over complicating a problems...

Thanks for keeping on this and if you find an answer please post it. My reason for wanting the feature is I go to sleep with streaming video from amazon or YouTube and the roll onto the mic later an the music starts. Even if the music app is not open at all it starts. I recognize all the reasons that apple does it but that doesn't make it right for everyone. So an option selection in settings seems appropriate. PS. Loved the guy who said it didn't drain the battery the promptly told you exactly how much battery drain there was from the specs. Sigh

Hi Chris,

I completely agree with Nicolas.

This feature drives me nuts. My phone is constantly playing music by accident.

I love using the earbuds but this is the worst downside (I have no interest in blue tooth).

Your "workaround" doesn't work.

I've tried force closing the music app 3 times. It won't wiggle.

And the minus sign does not appear.

How can I force close the music app?

Thanks,

L

Hi Nicolas ,

My wife has the same problem . She is always wrapping up the earphone around the iPhone .

And put it in her bag where there are a lot of stuff ! And inevitably , a movement in the bag or whatever which triggers the center button of the earphone ... And the music starts .

And she wants to always use the earphone . And I think she has the right to think this way as we do not fully know what are the side effects of having a smartphone on our ears all the time.

So no you are not the only one , and I am looking for a solution .

Any solutions are welcome including tweaks

Sadly enough, the only solution was to remove all music from my phone, which is not a solution. I feel I'm right back a decade ago with Microsoft's silly systems that tried to double guess what you wanted. Just let me choose. I don't need anyone to force music if the headset button is pushed on by mistake. Plus, it's terribly tacky when it happens in a meeting. I needed a cell phone primarily, not an annoying in your face jukebox.

i fear until Apple brings back up its customer service to its previous levels, I won't spend anymore money on that company. I'm experiencing more quirks now then I used to a few years ago on all devices. Wake up Apple. Twenty year old kids might be a lucrative money revenue string, but it never lasts. Take care of the old timers.
