iCal won't sync properly with iPad

I have been making adjustments to my work calendar for the next couple of months, adding some events and deleting some. When I sync with my iPad or iPhone the new events are added but the old events that have been removed from iCal, remain in the calendar on the iPad and phone.

Is this something I can fix or a software bug?
