HP Officejet 6500A won't scan.

My HP Officejet 6500A Plus E710n (purchased late 2011) won't scan. Prints just fine. I have a MacBook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) purchased late 2011.

I haven't scanned anything in over a year. When I tried to scan a document a few days ago, the problem began. After researching the Apple and HP boards, I uninstalled the original HP software and installed HP's updated software/updates/drivers. I also installed Apple's HP updates, still won't scan. Keep getting the error message "Scanner reported an error. Failed to open a session on the device."

I also deleted/re-added the printer and rebooted the MacBook umpteen times.

I see that when I re-add the printer, it comes up as Bonjour Multifunction (see photo), yet there's no mention of Bonjour in my Activity Monitor.

I'm stumped! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

The Bonjour Multifunction just means that the printer is connected through the network. It sounds like the software is fine. The message you're getting points to a potential hardware problem. Are there any error messages on the screen of the printer? If so, what are they? If not, see if doing a power cycle of the network will correct the problem. I'll put the instructions below. Let me know what you find.

To power cycle the network:

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. With the power still on, pull the power cord of the printer from the wall.
  3. If you have any other devices that connect to the network, such as iPhones, iPad, etc., make sure to turn them off as well.
  4. Turn off or disconnect power from your router.
  5. Wait 30 seconds.
  6. Turn the router back on or reconnect the power cord.
  7. Wait 1-2 minutes for the router to become stable.
  8. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  9. Turn the Mac back on.
  10. Turn any other devices you connect to the network back on.
  11. See if it will scan now.

Did you do the power cycle? If not, give it a shot. I've seen it correct problems like this one. If that doesn't, or hasn't worked, see if there is a permissions problem. The instructions for checking/repairing permissions are below. Let me know what happens.

To check/repair disk permissions:

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Search for and open Disk Utility.
  3. Select the drive with the OS installed,
  4. Click on Repair Disk Permissions. (This will check for and repair any broken disk permissions.)
  5. See if you can scan.

Since that didn't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and the HP software. I'll link the download below, so you don't have to search for it again. Let me know what happens.

I'm also going to include links to the instructions for uninstalling and installing the printer, in case you need to reference them.

TThank thank you for replying so quickly.

I Have actually uninstalled and reinstalled the printer several times. Even when it doe show up on the Printer and Scanner list in the system preferences, documents sent to the printer never 'arrive' there. The printer dialogue box says ' Opening printer connection ' but never completes that step.

Perhaps with this information you might have another suggestion.

Thank you. I really appreciate your help.

I can see this is ancient, but I have a similar problem....mine stopped working...I tried removing and re-adding the printer with no success 😟
I can get the printer on wifi (not having ANY luck with cabled option!)...scanner just sits "waiting for scanner".

If I try wifi and use airprint, likewise.

It is as if this otherwise perfectly good looking HP printer has stuck two fingers up at me to say "refresh" !

Any ideas? All the links given above just take to a generic HP website - I suspect even they have washed their hands of this unit!

thanks
