Q: My ipod is too old to download a lot of the apps I want is it possible to upgrade it?

You have a 1G iPod

Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes by:

Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)

Note that there are not that many apps that work with the 1G with 3.1.3

Once you update your device to the maximum, ios 3.1.3, you will have thousands of apps to choose from.  They will definitively not be the latest greatest though.

Updating the device and passing the older model to another is still the best choice.
