Mini display port to HDMI (have port but no HDMI option)

I have an older macbook that doesn't support hdmi under the preference / sound screen but it has the mini display port installed. To add hdmi functionality, is that a software or hardware upgrade since the port is installed? Thanks

Thanks. Apparently I can get video but not sound. When I attach the adapter all I see is the starry sky desktop, which isn't selected on my computer and I can see the display box but I can't get any video to run. Nothing from a browser. The tv doesn't even show a browser or anything on my desktop on the laptop. The tv just shows a box and starry sky. Any ideas?

That's normal, because the computer is using the extended mode. In this mode, you have the TV as an extension of your MacBook's display. To put windows on the TV, just move a window to the right of the MacBook's display and you will see that it will appear on the TV. If you want a different mode to use your TV as an external screen, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019
