Automatic Login option is set to off and is uneditable.
System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Login Options - > Automatic login: Off
Uneditable. The pull-down is grayed out. The sheet is unlocked and I can make other edits such as "Show Password Hints."
A Guest login is enabled.
FileVault is enabled.
Firewall is On.
I have this same config on another Mt. Lion machine and am able to enable automatic login.

You are only supposed to be able to set auto login to ON if Filevault is disabled. Are you sure you have Filevault enabled on the other machine? See this article for information:

You need to unlock the preference. Press the lock at the bottom left and enter admin password.
Ah, I see. I didn't want auto login on the other computers as they get around. The Air is for my 93 year old mother who doesn't need the security. We just updated from her original MacBook Air and didn't have FileVault enabled on that one. Thanks!

If you have an iPad or iPhone you can use TapIN . It's an excellent app just for auto login.
