USB thumbdrive not connecting - IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device

I have a macbook pro (17-inch mid 2010) with Mac OS X 10.7.5.

I've been having problems lately with it not recognizing USB thumb drives. USB mouse works fine in all usb ports.

When I insert a thumb drive I checked the console I get:

5/7/13 2:55:00.000 PM kernel: USBF:685.941[0xffffff8012c33200] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.

5/7/13 2:55:06.000 PM kernel: USBF:691.840[0xffffff8012c33200] The IOUSBFamily gave up enumerating a USB device after 10 retries. (Port 4 of Hub at 0xfa100000)

every few seconds.

Does any one know if this is this a hardware or software issue?

Thanks,

dave
