Q: iMac G4 Inverter?

If a G4 iMac has an almost black screen with a very dim image but can drive an external monitor OK, is it safe to assume it's the inverter that's gone? If so, are they still available (preferably in the UK)?

It's the inverter or the CCFL lamps.  The inverter provides the power for the lamps, and the lamps provide the LCD's backlight.  You may not be able to do anything about the lamps (if they are bad), because they may be embedded into the LCD component.  I don't know about were such parts would be available.
