If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions on all drives.
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it and got the message again that the disk can't be repaired. Do you think I need to buy a new backup drive?
Certainly the first order is another backup drive, what brand model is the one you have now???
I am not sure. It was the letters WD on the front I bought it at least 4-5 years ago.
