When installing .dmg files what do you do?

So I've never had anyone show me how to do this. What I've been doing when I download a .dmg file is double-clicking them while they are in the "Downloads" folder. Then sometimes another window pops up shows a picture of like the app with an arrow pointing to the applications folder. So I've been then dragging the app over to that folder and then just close that window. But also in that windows is a Read Me file and something else ...I've just been leaving them and closing that window when the copy is complete.

Then after installing, I'll put the .dmg file in a folder in my Documents that I store all of them in and I'm backing up in case I ever had to reimage the machine I'll have all the .dmg files in one place.

Does this work, or should I be moving those .dmg files somewhere else prior to double-clicking on them? I would just like to keep everything nice and tidy so I don't have junk all over the place. But I also want things to run fast and I don't know if there's something I should be doing differently.

Anybody know the best practice or where I can look to read about it?

How big is the file size of the folder you are storing these .dmg files in?

How much free space is left on your iMac's hard drive?

These maybe taking up valuable internal hard drive space on your iMac.

I have external hard drives that I save these . dmg files to one of these drives in a folder labelled Software Downloads.

I won't recommend an ext. hard drive at this time, but iIf the file size of this folder is substantial, I would archive these .dmg files to disc and delete them off of your iMac.

Copy them to your external hard drive and remove them from your internal drive.

Make the location on the external drive to save these to.

Why have these taking up space on the internal drive when you have external storage to store these.

Taking up internal hard drive space for no real reason.

I try to keep my iMac's internal drive as lean as I possibly can.

I have 3 ext, hard drives. Two have redundant backup data, the other ext. drive is my everyday working drive.

Ok I can easily move my dmg folder to another drive if space ever becomes an issue. The .dmg files once I install an application are not really my concern. I'm only keeping them in a central location that I backup in case I ever wanted to reimage my machine and not have to go and redownload all the apps and try and remember everything that I was using.

I was curious if when I double-click on the .dmg file where it's putting all the install stuff. If I copy the main icon for the app to my Applications folder, is that all there is to it? Does the "Read Me" and "License" folders have to go anywhere special? Answers to these types of questions are what I'm looking for.

But thank you for the replies ...I don't mean to dismiss your responses.
