Viewing MacBook Air display on TV

Hello,

I need some help in getting my computer to display the video from my MacBook Air to a TV. I have connected a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Video Adapter Converter and HDMI cable to computer and TV. When I connect it, the desktop background displays on the TV but nothing else. There are no icons, dock, or video displaying on the TV. I can only see my desktop background. Is there some setting I need make? Any help will be appreciated.
