How does a media projector with wi-fi work with iPad?

I would like to control a media projector with my iPad, and I am in the process of choosing a model. (I will be standing up front giving the lecture, so I can't see the screen. The iPad will show me the current slide.)

A number of the projectors "have wi-fi." What does that mean in the case of a projector? Does it require a wi-fi network in the room to which both devices are connected? Does the iPad see the projector as its own network and log directly onto it? Does the iPad need an app for this?

Would appreciate comments by someone with experience or who has seen it up close. Thanks.

Some projectors might work through the native 'airplay' function, which does require them both to be connected to a wifi network. Some may require an app - which would be noted on the packaging, I'd hope.

Worst case scenario - if the projector has hdmi input you could use the hdmi accessory to hook the iPad up to it or hook up an Apple TV to it and use airplay with that.
