I am trying to erase a G-Tech 4TB Raid external drive but keep getting the error "volume erase failed with the error: POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted." Other G-Tech 2TB drives erased fine. All are connected via eSata through a 4-port controller on my MacPro tower. I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Any thoughts?

Does this perhaps mean the G-Tech drive is failing?

You are trying to do something Mac OS X does not allow.
Is the drive still part of a RAID set? That information is encoded on the drive.
So, I wound up selecting the device, rather than the partition, and it worked just fine for me. Dunno why I hadn't thought of this sooner.
