Magnetic iSight Mount OK?

I have a G5 tower with a 23" flat panel monitor. Is it possible that the magnetic iSight mount could damage the monitor or should it be okay?

On an aluminum display, a magnetic mount might not be bad, but I can't say for sure. It would be worse if you placed the magnetic mount directly on top of your G5...then you could screw up the hard drive and other stuff by demagnetizing it.

Did Apple supply this mount to you? I don't remember getting such a mount with my iSight. If it is a third party mount, Apple will not support you if you cause damage to your display with it.

Hello Tim Swope,

About the only way your going to damage your monitor w/a magnetic mount, is to take the magnet and scratch it across the LCD display face.

Really, it should be ok.

That said, I also have a G5 tower w/similar display and found the magnet mount method unsatisfactory, and instead use the SightFlex, which can be found here as well as other vendors:

This base/stand/gooseneck, allows my iSight to "peak" over the top of the display and allow you to look "naturally" into the camera and still see the monitor.

Hello Danny Chapman,

And Cheers!.. to you all back in the Motherland.

No, I've also have a 2005 on my G5 (wife's computer) and it was fine(and always will be fine, unless it get's knocked off and scrapes the LCD); but we went with the SightFlex for convenience of moving around the house during our family overseas chats. The fixed location magnet mount was just that, too fixed to get everyone in the picture and to see us all on holidays.

So, magnetic force and LCD are not an issue. You may be able to distort the image temporarly with a really, really strong magnet, really, really close, but as soon as it is removed, would end the slight distortion.

Magnets and floppy's or (gasp!, tape) backup's are an issue. Magnets and HD's are possible but unlikely. Magnets and LCD's should not be an issue.

Cheers (right back at ya!),
Bill Gallagher
