Mac Pro 8core 2008 or 4core 2010?

Hi there,

I'm still working with my old Mac Pro 1,1 but it's just too slow to keep the workflow on Lightroom going on.

IMac always seems too expensive to get a decent machine, and working as a photographer with a big digital archive that I need to use frequently, going for the Imac also means buying fast and big external disks...

So I'm looking at upgrading for anohter Mac Pro and have these two options, but not sure wich one would give me the best upgrade I need to speed up Lightroom:

Mac Pro early 2008, 2,8 Ghz 8 core (2nd hand) 1250€

Mac Pro 2010, 2,8 GHz 4 core (new-refurb) 1900€

Any ideas? Thanks.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Update: I just had the opportunity to run a quick test on the 2008 8 core.

1) benchmark got 9400

2) export and convert about 50 raw files to jpeg on lightroom. Took 5min 45s.

Same tests on my Mac Pro 1,1 2,66, 4core: benchmarks 4500 but only 15 seconds more to export and convert...

Seems like I really need the 2010 model to see significant improvements...

Barefeats new test GPU results:

Testing 2008 vs 2009 and 2010 with GTX 680, Apple 5870, and AMD 7950:

And that the 7950 seems to be stuck and not showing improvement so could be a number of things holding it back and doing same or as poorly as 5870.

3. The 2008 Mac Pro displayed a definite handicap compared to the 2009 and 2010 in the two DaVinci Resolves tests.

So none of the above turned out to be good deals.

Meanwhile got a new camera that produces raw files that only LR5 can open, which I could only install on my 2012 Air. Mac Pro 1,1 is stuck on mac osx 10.6.8 and LR5 needs 10.7 or 10.8

So it's getting too complicated and really need to upgrade now.

These are my options

2nd hand 2010 mac pro 5,1 for 2300€

6 core 3.33ghz

24gb ram 1333

120 gb ssd (plus the 3 2tb HHD I already have in my mac pro with all the photos)

5770 1gb graphics

1 year warranty

New mac mini for 1650€

2,3 ghz i7

16gb ram 1600

1tb fusion drive

Western digital 6tb thunderbolt external

The mini is way cheaper but not sure it will be a major improvement from my actual machine.

But it might be a better investment now and consider the brand new mac pro in one year time....

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

you can install Lion

I would look for Mac Pro 4,1 2009.

For me, I added 3 x SSDs. I put two on Sonnet Tempo (you can get the Pro but 2x $)

I then boot from SSD #1 in drive bay 0.

I put two 256GB SSD on Sonnet Tempo.

I don't use LR5 but I would put its catalogue on one SSD

I would host photo images and imports on WD 2TB in drive bay #3 (bay #2 has other user files and media)

US$ for following:

120GB SSD Samsung 840 for system $96

240GB of same $170

500GB $320

Sonnet Tempo $150 / Pro version is for RAID performance 900MB/sec $300

ATI 5770 $250

8 x 2GB of RAM if you have less than that, more is better, $30 2 x 2GB

That will with those SSDs run smoothly. Can't hurt to do 5355s as they are better and for $100.

2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $30

Mac Pro 8GB Kit Komputerbay 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR2 667MHz ECC FB-DIMM (240 PIN)

http://www.amazon.com/Komputerbay-PC2-5300F-Buffered-FB-DIMM-Heatspreaders/dp/B0 05HIWD5U/

eBay (Europe)

A mini does not cut it for me. I could get along with an iMac but I'd wait for newer model at this point.

RAM $120

SSDs $400

Sonnet Tempo $150-300

5355 $100

ATI 5770 $250

That is about what a 2009 can be had for though I did it one item per month over 6 months

Thanks! your first setence sorted out for me at least for another 6 months. Just ordered Lion by phone with the Macstore.

6 months should be enough for the new Mac Pro to reach the stores, making 2nd hand market for older models more interesting... Right now there's not much choice (at least in europe) and most of them look overpriced...
