Ability to type in emails, To:, Subject:, and Message, suddenly quit. Keyboard screen does not come up either. Does with all other apps when required. One advice said to hold sleep/wake button until red code was received.

This is what was recommended to you. It is the red slider bar that was referenced.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
The sleep/wake button is found at the top right. If you can't see the button, look at the picture...
The sleep/wake button is also the power button, top edge, right side.
