how can I remove an app store app from 10.6.8
I downloaded an app from the appstore and want to remove it, but it remains in the "installed" state in app store. How can I remove it from the app store's idea of what's installed?

Via the App Store app hold down the option key while clicking on the "Installed" button to "hide purchase".
In iTunes you can just command-delete any app to remove it.
I don't see any apps in iTunes. Hiding the view of the installed app isn't really what I'm looking for. I'd like this to be removed and not just ignored. It seems untidy to leave it the way it is. Is there no way to actually remove it?
You didn't specify what type of app and iTunes holds the phone, touch and tablet versions.
Desktop machine apps are installed in the HD/Applications folder and can be dragged to the Trash to remove them.
Try opening iTunes there should be Apps in the left sidebar under library, click that and then selct the app you want to remove and command+delete.
Of course I tried this and there is no Apps in the left side bar, or anywhere else, as I already said.
It's a desktop app, the only kind available from the appstore, as I indicated in my original post. Also, as indicated in the original post, dragging to the trash removes it from my system, but not from the Appstore's notion of what's installed. The Appstore still thinks it's installed. That's the problem. It's a hygiene issue.
The app is always going to be associated with the ID used to purchase it (so you can download it again, if needed).
Delete it to the Trash and "hide" the purchase is the best you can do.
