May 9, 2013 2:12 PM in response to gionzlby LarryHN,I could copy them into iPhoto's library (after "Show Packaged Contents") but it is unclear where I should copy them to.
No Where
Rule 1 - NEVER make any changes of any sor tthe the structure or content of the iPhoto library using the finder - doing so will not work and may corrput yoru library and cause dataloss
How did you "move" teh iPhoto library to the new MBP? The proper way is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

May 9, 2013 3:11 PM in response to LarryHNby gionzl,Hi LN,
Thanks for your response. To be clear, yes, I followed the proper method as you suggest but this still lead to missing shared photostreams.
All I can see are empty icons for the photostreams but each of them reports zero photos.
But I did spot the missing photostreams as folders and moved to Trash so I wondered that if I could copy them back into iPhoto's library so iPhoto could rebuild them, but I wasn't sure where they should go.
Alternatively and probably more securely is there a way of forcing them to re-download?
I noticed this person (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1540688) also had a similar problem but no solution has been proposed.

Where did you find these "folders
and moved to Trash
Exactly how did you do this?

Not sure what part of NEVER make any changes of any sort to the contents of the iPhoto library you are haveing trouble with
There are NO user servicable parts in the iPhoto library and you can never do anyting inside the iPhoto library directly -- You can not put anyting "into" the iPhoto library and have it work
on your Mac go to the system preferences and turn off iCloud - in iPhoto turn off PhotoStream - eboot and turn them back on - maybe that will jump start a download

May 10, 2013 7:26 AM in response to LarryHNby gionzl,Hi LN,
Thanks again for your reply. To be clear, I have not copied them into the iPhoto library, my original message was just checking if it *could* be done and from your first response you've been quite clear on that point.
For your other question, I noticed the folders and files in the Trash by chance, as it was a fresh OS install and given I had not deleted anything, I was surprised to see items already in the Trash folder. When I investigated further I noticed that they were some (but not all) of my Shared Photostreams. I assume this was the result of some automatic process, after opening iPhoto for the first time.
To solve the problem, I've tried several times to turn on and off the photostream as you suggest but this does not seem to work. I have also thought of reinstalling the OS and restoring from Time Machine, but hoping there is an easier way.
Thanks again for your help.

Is this the system trash? Or the iPhoto trash?

May 10, 2013 7:47 AM in response to LarryHNby gionzl,Good point. System Trash, not iPhoto Trash. So whereever they are stored in the library, they were moved to System Trash.

May 10, 2013 8:03 AM in response to gionzlby LarryHN,OK - if you go back to the olde system does PS work correctly there?
If so try moving the library again
Quit iPhoto and Drag the library on your new system to the desktop - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward. hopefully with the new system having the exact same library as the olde system that you verified just prior to moving again

May 15, 2013 3:06 AM in response to LarryHNby gionzl,Hi LN,
In the end, I restored the backup from Time Machine (when it all used to work), reconnected Photostream (including Shared Photostreams) and after a couple of days downloading it now all seems to be working. The photos do get moved to System Trash, but this must be automatic as part of the updating process.
So after a few days and a sledgehammer approach, it looks like things are now back to normal.
Thanks for responding to my query.
