how to retrieve a document from time machine

Help!! I have been working on a Final Paper in pages and thought it was saved...well I cant find it. It has been open for a few days on my desk top and thought maybe I could retreive it through time machine...but I dont know how or if this is possible since it wasnt saved? I tried spotlight but that didnt help. Can anyone help?
