mirroring doesn't stay "on" anymore

I use an external monitor with my MacBook Air. Until yesterday, the "turn mirroring on" feature would stay on after I turned it on. Now, I have to turn it on everytime I start up my computer. What happened and how can I get it to stay on all the time again?
