I've upgraded my iphoto app but now can't open it. A message comes up saying I will need to upgrade my iphoto library to use new version of app but when I click on upgrade a further message says "Unable to write to library check that the volume has sufficient disk space." I then have only the option of quitting iphoto. I don't understand what is meant by the check volume message. I have plenty of storage space left on my mac. Any help appreciated.
How large is you HD and how much space do you have left?

Although you shouldn't need it, make sure you have backup of all your photos.

May 10, 2013 11:28 AM in response to malnewby Old Toad,Are you saying your hard drive is only 4GB in size and you have 2 GB free space left? That's impossible. Click on the hard drive icon on the Desktop and type Command+i to bring up the Info window. It will indicate the drive size and the amount of free space:
If you only have 2-4 GB free space regardless of the drive size you're in trouble. It's recommended that a minimum of 10 GB free space be maintained for optimal system and application performance. If you let the free space fall any lower you may lockup your iMac and not be able to boot.
Definitely get an external hard drive and move files off of your boot drive. You can copy the iPhoto Library to an EHD and operate it from there as one way to free up space.
