Cassette adapter for ipod - having problems - please help

I just purchased my ipod 30 gig a month ago. At the time the person at Apple store recommended that I buy a cassette adapter so I could play on car radio. I have a 2006 Honda CRV with the standard cassette amfm radio. I can barely hear it on the radio. Really bought it to listen to podcasts but they come in very softly if at all - the same with music. I have followed the direction, leaving the volume on ipod at about 2/3 and then tried it at every level and it is not working. Has anyone had these problems?

1. Silly suggestion: does your deck have autoreverse? Be sure it's playing the right side of the cassette.

2. Does a normal cassette tape work properly in your deck? Have you tried the adapter in another car? Just trying to separate the adapter from the car...

3. With the iPod off or not connected, and the car off but key on "accessory" position, listed to the deck mechanism itself to see if it's constantly flipping sides (I don't know Hondas at all, maybe there's a visual indicator). Autoreverse decks switch direction when they sense the tape stopping. Some decks are too smart and watch the relative movement of the reels and capstan. Those decks are almost impossible to get to work with an adapter.

4. Try a different brand adapter. Because of the reel sensors, cassette adapters have all sorts of wacky mechanical linkages to try to fake out the autoreverse. Different brands have different mechanisms, so where one brand doesn't work another might.

(I use an adapter from Radio Shack in my late-model Toyota).
