Contact phone number has red circle next to it. Why?

When I add a contact, either manually or from a text message, and type in the phone number, there is a red circle with a minus within it, next to the phone number. Same with email address. I'm very new at this and I understand there is supposed to be a greeen plus sign next to the number and email instead.

Can anyone help? And with huge thanks in advance.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4

After chatting with Apple support, it turns out this is the way it's supposed to be. The user manual is in error, saying there will be a green plus sign to add more phone numbers or emails.

The way it actually works is that if you fill in both phone numbers (or emails), an additional blank one is automatically created.

Thanks for attempting to help me... this is my first iPhone! I appreciate the community!
