A friend of mine has an iPad 2 but not an iphone. I have an iphone 4s and a mac (OS 6). Can we communicate via iMessage?

I already use Imessage with no problem between family and friends with an iphone but when I try to send an imessage to this friend, their contact details appear in red...which I assume means I'm sending them an SMS, and therefore it's not free.

This information seems to tell me that our apple devices should 'find' each other using the apple id email address, not the non-apple telephone number. I'll put that to the test!
