convert file to mp3

I remember that I used to be able to convert a file to mp3 but I can't find the dropdown item anymore. Can somebody tell me where it is in the newest version?

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

In iTunes' menu, choose Preferences (under iTunes). On the General tab, to the right of "When You Insert a CD", choose "Import Settings ...". It's there.

Once the Preference is set the conversion is accessed from menu File>Create New Version>Create MP3 version
