Problem starting some 3rd party apps OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion

I have two 3rd party apps that fail to launch.

For both the following is true...

- the app menu appears,

- the icon appears in the Dock,

- an active window does not appear,

- the spinning colour wheel of pain appears over any (active?) component of the app,

- right clicking the app in the dock indicates a "Force Quit" option due to softwarte not responding,

- Force quit is required.

I have uninstalled these apps initially using "App Trap", which usually grabs an appropriate "plist" file. I then delete from within my ~/Library any applicable and obvious com.xxxxxxx files from the folders Preferences, Containers, and Group Containers. Neither have any files in ~/Library/Application Support...

I have attempted to find a solution separately with the 3rd party app authors, however their methods have not worked. These apps are well known, I love using them both, and are usually rock solid, and both operate on OS X and iOS. I use both apps on both OS, however predominantly on iOS...

Anyone able to assist please?

Thanks in advance...

Are they all from the Mac App Store?

If they are you may have already tried this, but moving the apps to the Trash should make them available to re-download from your Purchases tab in the App Store. Maybe a fresh install will help.

Sometimes app deletion programs can cause problems by not catching everything that needs to be deleted.

I don't know these applications - do they interact with the internet? If so, do you run any anti-virus software - Norton, Avast, MacKeeper, etc, or Little Snitch or Perian? I've seen occasions on here where they have caused problems with internet connections.

If they don't rely on the internet I'm afraid I'm stuck for other ideas 😟.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Paul_31 thanks agian for your help - these apps all interact with the internet - iCloud specifically - and mobile documents on my iOS devices... So on your suggestion I found the iCloud data folder located at ~/Library/Mobile Documents/ however attempting to select any of these upsets Finder, so I will follow Linc's suggestion above before I proceed any further with anti-virus software.

May 11, 2013 8:43 PM in response to Linc Davis

Linc, I seem to be experiencing problems with Finder now... I have to relaunch and it works for about 1 second, then hangs... refer to the hang reports noted below.

This is what has occured since last restart...

I can send the hang files but I suspect these are too large to post here?!?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Thanks Linc,

Step 1 Result - The "Day One" app launched fine in the temporary user account.

Step 2 Result - The first Safe Mode restart failed and my iMac shutdown automatically, however the second Safe Mode restart was successful. Yes this takes a very long time. The "Day One" app did not launch properly in my usual user account (with the problem).

Restarting and logging into my usual user account (with the problem) was the same result - the "Day One" app did not launch properly.

I have now identified that this is an issue with the following apps; "Day One", "MindNode Pro", "iA Writer" & Apple's own "Text Edit".

Note from earlier... the Finder issue is resolved - I deleted the data located in com.apple.finder.savedState folder in ~/Library/Saved Application State. There appears to be an issue when attempting to access data located in ~/Library/Mobile Documents...

Is it possible this could be tied into the issue trying to access the folder "Mobile Documents" in ~/Library/?

Linc, PS, this is the Console text from the following actions;

- clear the console screen,

- attempt to open Day One,

- Force Quit (Application Not Responding).

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.

First, empty the Trash.

Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):

find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.

The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

Thanks Linc,

An error recommended a closing parenthesis, however this returned a syntax error. Could you please check the command you provided?

Andrews-iMac:~ acdobson$ find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o

find: (: missing closing ')'

Andrews-iMac:~ acdobson$ find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o)

-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `)'

Thanks again for your perseverance...
