Mac OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit

Force quitting should be an exceptional measure. What if an app repeatedly refuses to close?

That happens to my Mac Mail app. I cannot close it and if I try to turn off my computer, I am warned that the computer cannot shutdown because Mail is preventing it.

That is, I have to force quit several times a week.

Happened with ML and is happening still on Mavericks. Any way to fix that?

I'm having the same trouble and i don't think that < Command + Opt + Esc and force to quit > is the solution.

Hope there is a way to fix that...

I to am having issues on 2 iMacs, and my Macbook Pro.  I agree with BTB and Nana, it should not require a force quit to close an application like Mail.

If I could mark this as unsolved I would.  Force quiting is not a solution!

I would like to suggest to Flor María Dávila Pinos to sign in here and mark it as unsolved, as Lareg said.

And since we don't have a real solution, i start wondering if this new feature of answering an e-mail message using the dialog box of the notification bar is causing this. I've disabled it today, just in case...it's not a solution, of course - but if it works, is a clue to Apple Support

I too have this issue.  I need to force quit Mail half the time I am shutting down.  zharry

Have you tried disabling the feature of e-mail notification (notification sidebar)?
I did it last december and i'm not dealing with this issue since then.
