how to change background colour of everthing, not just word pages?

On my PC I can change the background colour of everything I open and it is saved as such. On the Mac I can only find out how to do this on word and even then if I open a new page it changes back to Black and white. Also if I change it on Word it prints with that colour where as on my PC I can just get it as a few. on my PC I go into display settings and change it there. where do I do this on the Mac? It does not need to have the option.
