2 yr-old macbook. working fine, powered on and charged up. turned off on its own and when I try to turn it on, nothing happens. I held down start button, still nothing. I plugged in the power cord and notice the light does not go on (however, charge status is not the issue as it was at least halfway charged when it turned off).
Any thoughts?

The logic board is damaged. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is to take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller and get ready for an expensive repair

One final question - is this something that someone who is familiar with repairing Macs could handle, or do you recommend Apple store?
I recommend the Apple Store because you need a new logic board, and your computer requires a specific model, so nobody else, apart from a reseller, has got that logic board

Oh wait 🙂 ONE more question... have I lost everything on the hard drive?!?
If it's a logic board issue, the hard disk is OK, so you shouldn't have lost anything. Furthermore, when Apple replaces the logic board, the only parts which will be the same in your computer will be the memory and the hard disk
