my ipod is frozen with do not disconnect on the screen and will not reset

I have disconnected my ipod incorrectly. It now has the do not disconnect sign frozen on the screen.

I have attempted to reset by holding down the play/pause button and the menu button at the same time

but have no results it remains frozen

Any one out there have any suggestions?
