I am having issues extending my wireless Uverse network using an airport extreme. I can join my network but cannot connect to the network joined when i connect to the ports on the AE. I need some guidance with this please.

Unfortunately, these products are not compatible for that purpose.
Apple's "extend" setting is designed to be used with other Apple routers, so it would be extremely unlikely that this feature would work with a 3rd party router.
in other words, if the AirPort Extreme is configured to "join" the Uverse wireless network, no extension is attained, and the Ethernet ports on the AirPort are not enabled.
that is disappointing that apple is continuing some of it proprietary foolishness.
