Have you tried pausing the download? Tap on the icon or swipe across the progress bar?

If you can't stop it or delete it, download it in iTunes on your computer and sync it. If you don't use iTunes, go somewhere that there is a faster internet connection available for you. I have download a few movies and it has taken me anywhere from 30 minutes to and hour - even for a 2 GB movie.

    Hi thanks for the reply.

I use a 100mb broadband so no probs on the speed front for downloading, My lappy etc works just fine etc. The ipad is just hanging. All i want to do is delete the download, it does seem that a number of people have the same issues, i wonder if its an apple problem perhaps. Some say there should be a stop button on the download screen but i and other cannot find it

You rebooted by holding down on the sleep an home buttons until the Apple logo appeared and that didn't work correct? If that's not how you rebooted, try that first. If you tried it and it didn't work, sign out of your ID, restart the iPad and that might refresh the download and get it moving.

Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then see if it resumes normally.

If you swipe across the film in the Downloads tab do you get a Delete button appear on it ? But before you try that, what country are you in - films can't be re-downloaded in all countries, if you are in a country where you can re-download films then it should under the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes.

Ive tried all the usual reboots, signing out and back in again. Its a nightmare for sure. Ive tried swiping across the download but that doesnt work either. A good hammer maybe needed.
