Ipod takes forever to sync, freezes, erases all songs. Help!!!

I decided to restore my ipod classic 160gb, since in certain songs it stops mid-song and skips to the next one. there are some instances where the entire album is unplayable, and it'll hang on each song for a few seconds with the counter at 0:00 and then simply skip to the next song. After the restoring, i successfully added one album, which i was able to listen to all the way through. however, every other attempt at adding music is taking far too long.

it's taking more than 30 times as long to add music as it ever did before. i used to be able to upload an album to my ipod in about 20 seconds. now, putting an album on my ipod takes anywhere from 10-30 minutes. Its so frusterating, i'm losing my mind. i have to force quit itunes in the end, because it takes far too long for the "updating files" to finish, and i can't eject the ipod while it's updating. After i force eject, it gives my a syncing error message and then any songs on my ipod have are all erased.

i've tried restoring the ipod several times and restarting my computer a few times. nothing resolves this issue.

From one music lover to another, please help!!! I'm slowly dying without my ipod. 😟

Extra info: i have the latest version of itunes. Syncing songs on other computers takes no time at all therefore im not sure that its actually my ipod that is the problem.

Any information at all is greately appreciated!!

Thank you 🙂

Hi Kathy,

No cure here, I am afraid, but I am glad that my problem is not unique: I have dealt with the very same symptoms over the past few weeks, i.e. tracks getting skipped at random, with total silence for a few seconds and then onto the next track.

Now that I've reset my iPod, which contained 21700+ tracks, and wanting to refill it with the back-up iTunes songs on my completely reinstalled Windows Vista computer, iTunes gets stuck after uploading about 300 tracks, just keeps going round and round, freezes and erases the iPod again completely after spewing some Error warnings.

I suspect the hard disk is not working properly anymore, or would it be the new iTunes 11 software version that just does not agree with the older iPods (mine is an 160 GB iPod Classic, bought about 3 years ago).

I hope some other people have had similar problems and might have some ideas how to fix them ?

I'm eagerly awaiting ideas - my iPod has indeed been my constant companion for the past 3 years, and I'd hate to have to buy a new one already !

Thanks very much already, all you bright computer people out there !

Thats interesting Mike. i never thought about itunes 11 not being compatable with classics. itunes 11 makes me want to tear my hair out. I uninstalled it and downloaded itunes 10 but the same thing was still happening 😟 I honestly have no idea what to do. And my ipod syncs fine on other computers that have itunes 11. So i have NO idea whether its my ipod or itunes or both. I've been troubleshooting for weeks. And my ipod is only 1 year old. I haven't physically damaged it either.

I really just wanna get a new classic but i have a feeling the same thing is going to happen because if other people plug their ipods into my computer the same problems happen.

Hopefully somebody has been able to fix this problem!!

I've read a very interesting thread on making itunes sync faster... http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=406544 however, i can't find the crashreporter file on my laptop, it just doesn't exist. And i can't find any info on why its not there.

Thank you in advance to anybody who can provide me with any information.

Hi

I have had *exactly* the same experience. I figured it was a hardware fault so went to the Apple Store (my Classic is only 6 months old) but they didn't think it was hardware. As I'm running it through Windows, they couldn't provide much help other than to reinstall iTunes - not good.

So I loaded all of my songs on (waited the whole time...) then removed them all by unticking them all and syncing again, then ticked them all and synced again so that everything was back on. And so far, it's worked. Fast loading, no skipping, no problems. I still can't be certain it's fixed, but I haven't had the problem in 2 weeks, so some improvement.

I'd love to know of anyone else who's had this problem!

mjcarroll1985, thanks for your input! I'll most definetely try this when i get to my computer tonight. Even if it provides a quick fix id be very greatful. Have you maybe done anything that might have physically damaged the hard drive?

I've been very desperate to just get a new classic. everybody online says its a hardware issue... I'm still thinking it might be... ipod classic harware is so intricate and delicate i've discovered. I've been kind of stupid with my ipod. Dropping it (which everybody does) but also listening to music on a doc while im in the shower (my weird guilty pleasure might be dancing in the shower) so i think i've really damamged the hardrive with heat and humidity. But im still not ready to let go of my ipod. I really hope its not a hardware issue.

If not, ill get a new classic and be extra careful with it.

Thanks for your help!

And if anybody else has ideas, i would appreciate your contribution!

Thanks for the link to the test - really useful.

I had over 5000 reallocs in my SMART test - my iPod is only 6 months old - does this suggest the hard drive is failing?

Yes. Compare with mine that had 12 reallocs after 2 years of daily use. Unless you've let it get too hot, too cold, or been playing keepy-uppy with it, a 6 month old drive ought not to have that many errors.

If it is, looks like I'll have to take another trip to the Apple Store...

Good luck. Hopefully they can just swap it out for you,

Thanks for your great input turingtest2, it made me establish that my hard disk has indeed been completely corrupted:

Retracts: 6

Reallocs: 16104 (!!!)

Pending Sectors: 272 (!!!)

I've sent an e-mail to www.ipodrepair.nl to find out how much it would cost to have them replace the hard disk in my iPod. Have you already done that diagnostic test, kathy_chrz, it seems the only way to make sure if we are indeed in for a replacement or not ! I've really felt a lot better since I finally know what's wrong and so can stop trying endless things that won't work anyway, I can recommend that for you peace of mind ! 😉

I'll let you guys know how many arms and legs it costs in our part of the woods (I live in Belgium, but there doesn't seem to be a replacement service here, so I have to pop to The Netherlands for a fix 😉)

Mike

PS: I'm blessed with the fact that still about 2 GB of the 160 GB does seem to work: I manage to get about 250 songs on it before it collapses and wipes everything, so I try not to be greedy and enjoy "just a bit of music" while I'm underway. But I miss my whole bunch of 21896 numbers though...

yes i have done the diagnosstic test and my reallocs are also very high 😟 i figured i would keep trying though until i know FOR SURE that theres nothing i can do... i actually reformatted my ipod (erased the actual software) which actually made sycing time faster. It does freeze but manages to unfreeze after about a minute.. if im really fed up with it im just gunna get a new ipod 😟 (and take really good care of it). Thanks for everybodys help!!!!
