Debit card and iTunes account?

I want to transfer money straight into my iTunes account, but I'm not sure if I can actually use my debit card. I don't have a credit card and don't intend to get one soon, and I don't like having to buy gift cards that just take up space. Is there any safe way to transfer money electronically?
