Hi there!
Well, it is not set up at all. I just figured out I have to go through Apple Mail to set up my Mail instead of system preferences... wierd. But then, now iCloud Notes doesn't want to set up on my Mac. It say's everytime that it can't be set up on this Mac.

I am currently getting the same issue after reformatting my HDD. Prior to reformatting, I had no issues with my iCloud on my mac.
Currently my iPad mini and iPhone's icloud mail is working.
Coincidentally, setting up gmail mail is not working either. I am wondering if these issues are related.
I just called apple support and they told me that they are having problems and the engineer are working on it
After a clean install of 10.8.3 I'm not able to activate the Mail and Notes Checkboxes at the iCloud system preferences, but above all I'm not able to activate the Mail checkbox for my GMail account either, just Calendar and Messages.
Same issue here. Since last night I'm not able to enable iCloud Mail in System Preferences. Hopefully Apple will fix this issue soon.
Add me to the me toos 😟
The same is happening for me as well.
I was on the phone with Apple Tech Support for 1.5 hours yesterday and they will be looking into it. They did not have an answer or fix at this time. My case was forwarded to the engineers who work only during the week.

The Apple Services System Status page has been updated to show that Apple is aware of the problem with iCloud Mail and Notes, so hopefully we should have a fix soon.
It looks like the issue has been resolved. I deleted my iCloud account from my Mac and re-added it. The configuration, including Mail and Notes, went through with no problem.
