Where is the word document?

I just switched over from Macs from my old laptop and the first thing I looked for, being a student, was a type of word document like Microsoft Word but I cant find any other than notepad

that's correct, macs do not come with word processing software pre-installed, except text edit.

But you can download for free LibreOffice or OpenOffice and use that instead.

I have MS Office, Open Office and LibreOffice. I find the best to be obviously MS Office, but in terms of free I prefer OpenOffice.
